In elementary, my son preferred riding the bus to school. The bus would pick him up between 7:12 – 7:15 a.m., so we knew we could leave the house no later than 7:05 a.m. Perfect. We had our morning schedule worked out and the timing down right to the minute. We had the driver figured out and everything ran smoothly.
All of a sudden, the bus driver decided to change up on us. Instead of picking up the kids at the bus stop in that 4-7 minute window, she arrived whenever. And we had to be ready. So unpredictable. To make sure my son didn’t miss the bus, we had to leave the apartment extra early. Some days it was very frustrating for both of us trying to figure out if the bus had passed or if it was running late.
JAMES 4:14, HCSB You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring — what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes.
It’s safe to say that sometimes we think we have this thing called LIFE all figured out. We make our daily plans, oftentimes without consulting God. We coast through our day pridefully assuming “Yep, I got this figured out. I’m in control. I hold my future in my hands. I’m in charge of my life.” Boy, are we way off. Before we know it, surprise! All of a sudden, life has changed.
The bottom of our world has just dropped out. Series of unfortunate events have made our perfect (but not so perfect) planned life crumble into chaos. You’ve probably heard this statements before, “You’re either in a storm, coming out of one, or heading in to it.” And it’s true. Just take a look at your life right now. It is your compass for recognizing which season you’re in. Think about it. Did you just come out of a hurricane? Are you in the calm before the storm? Is it the monsoon season? Maybe it’s summertime. Even still, soon the weather will change. And once again, we’ll be reminded that we are not in control.
So what do we do when LIFE shows us we’re not in charge? How do we response and where do we turn when the path we’re traveling on brings us to a fork in the road? What do we do when the weather quickly turns into a tropical storm?
ADJUST. Adjust our attitude. We adjust our mindset by keeping our thoughts on the Creator, looking to Him for peace in our storms (Is. 26:3). We make adjustments by being grateful for whatever season God has us in (Ecc. 3:1-8).
ADMIT. Admit we cannot control life. Admit that we don’t know everything, but we serve a mighty God who does (Zeph. 3:17). Nothing surprises Him. He is all-knowing and all-wise, and we are safe in His hands (Jud. 1:25; Ps. 91:4).
REMEMBER. Remember seasons change (Ecc. 3:1-8). Therefore, things will eventually change for the better. They always do. Nothing stays the same. Remember God’s promise in Romans 8:28, and find strength in knowing that everything will work out for our good.
TRUST. Most importantly, trust God, not ourselves. Trust Him for direction (Prov. 3:5-6). Trust His sovereignty, protection, and plans for our lives (Jer. 29:11). Since He is our heavenly Father and we are His children, we’re in good hands (Matt. 7:11). We have no need to worry or be anxious (Phil. 4:6).
My sister, life is so unpredictable. We don’t have any idea what’s around the corner or what tomorrow brings. We cannot rely on our own abilities to navigate through life’s journey. Howbeit, we can trust in an omniscient God who is everywhere and knows all things.
Your sis,
